Dr. Alvin Mushlin Selected to Receive the 2015 SMDM Career Achievement Award
Alvin Mushlin, M.D., Sc.M., the Nanette Laitman Distinguished Professor of Public Health in the Department of Healthcare Policy and Research and Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, has been selected to receive the 2015 Career Achievement Award from the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM).
Dr. Mushlin's research focuses on the comparative effectiveness of clinical interventions, with an emphasis on the use of large data sets and observational research designs as alternatives to randomized controlled clinical trials. He also concentrates on the application of decision and cost-effectiveness analysis to the evaluation of clinical policies and medical technologies, with the aim of improving the quality and efficiency of medical care and public health.
"I cannot think of a more deserving clinical researcher to receive this award than Dr. Mushlin," says Rainu Kaushal, M.D., M.P.H., chair of the Department of Healthcare Policy and Research at Weill Cornell Medical College and physician-in-chief of healthcare policy and research at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. "Al is an outstanding scientist, who is an international leader in patient-centered comparative effectiveness research and medical decision making. I am thrilled that he is being honored with this prestigious award."
The SMDM encompasses professionals performing research in decision analysis, modeling, and cost effectiveness analysis worldwide. Its members are researchers, clinicians, and leaders in the fields of medical decision sciences, health economics, and biostatistics. This award, which will be presented at the SMDM’s 37th Annual Meeting from October 18-21, recognizes distinguished senior investigators who have made significant contributions to the field of medical decision making.
From 1999 to 2013, Dr. Mushlin served as chairman of what was then the Department of Public Health and was also public health physician-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell.
"I am very pleased and honored to be recognized by my colleagues for this award," Dr. Mushlin says. "I have been a member of the Society for Medical Decision Making nearly since its inception. It has become one of the strongest and most relied on academic resources for evaluating new clinical technologies and strategies in medicine through comparative effectiveness research. My own career has benefited greatly from my association with this organization, and I am incredibly appreciative of this honor."
Dr. Mushlin is the author of over 100 publications in the fields of clinical epidemiology, medical technology assessment, clinical economics, and primary care. He has been a consultant to many national groups, including the Clinical Efficacy Assessment Project of the American College of Physicians, the National Blue Cross Association, the United States Preventive Health Services Task Force, and most recently the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) where he serves as chair of its advisory panel on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment options.
