Dr. Bruce Schackman Is Appointed the Saul P. Steinberg Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Public Health
Bruce R. Schackman, PhD, Professor of Healthcare Policy and Research and Professor of Healthcare Policy and Research in Medicine, has been appointed the Saul P. Steinberg Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Public Health, effective January 1, 2015. Dr. Schackman joined the Weill Cornell Medical College’s Department of Public Health in 2001 and became Chief of the department’s Division of Health Policy in 2006. He received tenure in 2011 and in 2013 was promoted to Professor. In 2014, as part of the newly configured Department of Healthcare Policy and Research, Dr. Schackman served as Interim Chief of the department’s Division of Comparative Effectiveness and Outcomes Research.
Dr. Schackman is uniquely qualified to be appointed to the Saul P. Steinberg Distinguished Professorship. He is a first-rate scholar and a recognized authority in the academic healthcare policy community studying the treatment of patients with substance use disorders. His substance use healthcare policy research has been principally focused on two areas: integrated treatment of substance use disorders and infectious diseases, and alternatives to methadone for treating opioid use disorder. He has established himself as a national leader, as well as an extraordinarily effective collaborator, in conducting economic evaluations alongside clinical trials and cohort studies, cost-effectiveness and comparative effectiveness simulation modeling, and implementation science studies. He is also an exceptionally skilled mentor, and his activities in this role at Weill Cornell have been well integrated into our clinical substance abuse treatment programs.
