Health Informatics Faculty and Fellows

Health Informatics

The primary focus of the division's research is evaluating the value of health IT as its use becomes more widespread in health care. We focus on a wide variety of outcomes including clinical quality and safety, economic value, health IT adoption, and consumer and provider experience. Major categories of research include

  • Evaluations of health IT initiatives, including electronic health records (EHRs), electronic prescribing, and personal health records (PHRs);
  • Evaluations of the effects of health information exchange (HIE);
  • Studies of the effectiveness, comparative effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of health IT;
  • Evaluations of health care delivery systems, including medical home and pay-for-performance programs;
  • Nationally relevant health IT policy studies.

The division is also home to the leadership of the Health Information Technology Evaluation Collaborative (HITEC) for New York State. HITEC, a formal academic collaborative of four universities, has been designated by New York State as the sole evaluation entity for the state’s $250 million health information technology program (HEAL NY). As members of HITEC, division faculty conduct highly collaborative evaluation research with communities around New York State that are developing and implementing novel health IT and HIE initiatives.
