Developing an actionable patient taxonomy to understand and characterize high-cost Medicare patients

In a study published in Healthcare, Dr. Rainu Kaushal, Dr. Yongkang Zhang, Dr. Zachary Grinspan, Dr. Dhruv Khullar, Dr. Mark Aaron Unruh,  Dr. Elizabeth Shenkman, and Andrea Cohen developed an actionable taxonomy to cpature and characterize high-cost Medicare patients into clinically meaningful patient categories. The taxonomy, which incorporates medical, behavioral, and social characteristics, could be helpful to both providers and healthcare systems to better understand their patients and provide targeted care plans.
