Dr. Himel Mallick Receives Prestigious Alumni Award for Research

Dr. Himel Mallick, assistant professor of population health sciences, was selected as the 2023 recipient of the Alumni Award for Research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health. This honor recognizes exceptional contributions to cutting-edge research and an exemplary commitment to making a lasting, positive change in public health.

Dr. Mallick, who received his PhD from UAB, is a data scientist and computational biologist with nearly two decades of experience in academia and industry. His methodological research interests include Bayesian statistics, machine learning, and omics data science methods. He has published in several high-impact journals, including Nature and Lancet, and developed bioBakery tools regularly used in large-scale, microbiome multi-omics studies. Dr. Mallick is also a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute.

“I am deeply honored to receive the prestigious alumni award from UAB and thank the UAB School of Public Health (SOPH) for recognizing our efforts in public health research,” he shared. “Reflecting on the transformative experiences and lasting connections forged during my time at the university, I am looking forward to celebrating this in person with other alumni award recipients and UAB SOPH faculty and staff in April.”
