Executive MBA/MS in Healthcare Leadership Program Hosts Faculty Spotlight with Dr. Steven A. Carvell

A comprehensive understanding of financial structures and problem-solving strategies is integral for healthcare professionals seeking to drive innovation in a rapidly evolving industry. The Executive MBA/MS in Healthcare Leadership program offers a range of courses addressing financial competencies taught by esteemed experts. Recently, the program hosted a prospective student reception with one of these faculty members, Dr. Steven A. Carvell, professor of finance, chair of finance area, and academic director of the Center for Real Estate and Finance at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business.

Dr. Carvell has worked in applied strategy in the equity market and served as a consultant to the Presidential Commission on the 1987 stock market crash. He also serves on several private equity and start-up boards in health care, real estate, hospitality, and consumer goods. Dr. Carvell currently teaches two courses for the program: Introduction to Corporate Finance and Mergers and Acquisitions. Initially, he focuses on the fundamentals of valuation, including the process of modeling or how investment decisions are made. “The investment decision may be buying a physician practice or merging with another hospital,” he explains. The courses also cover the areas of the drug development process, industry trends, cost of capital, enterprise value, IPOs, and the acquisition cycle.

“The students in this program are just amazing - half of them are practitioners, and the other half are already running parts of hospitals,” he shared. “The idea here is that you start thinking about how to apply these strategies to your organization.”

In addition to the rigorous business curriculum, the executive program offers courses that equip students with the tools and skills to develop an in-depth understanding of the healthcare ecosystem, from research to market.
